Cucurella Admits Turning Down Real Madrid Was Never an Option

Spain defender Marc Cucurella has opened up about his move to Real Madrid, admitting that declining the club's approach was never a serious consideration.
Cucurella completed a transfer from Chelsea to Real Madrid in a deal worth €60 million, signing a six-year contract that ties him to the Bernabéu until 2032. The deal was wrapped up in roughly a day and a half after newly appointed manager José Mourinho made direct contact with the player.
"It all happened very quickly. I'm very happy about this new chapter. They called me in the morning and told me the clubs had already agreed. I had no doubts — it was a big step in my career. We had it done in a day, so now I can focus on the World Cup,"Cucurella said while on duty with Spain at the FIFA World Cup 2026.
A move he could not refuse
Speaking candidly about the decision, Cucurella acknowledged that he has respect for differing opinions on his career choices, but left no ambiguity about where he stood.
"When Real Madrid wants you, it's very difficult to turn them down. I had no doubt that it was the right move, and I'm very happy with this decision,"he said.
Cucurella also reflected warmly on his time in Catalonia, recognising that careers move through different phases. "I'm grateful for everything I experienced in Barcelona, but there are different phases in life," he added.
Targeting trophies at the Bernabéu
The defender is under no illusions about the expectations that come with representing one of the world's most decorated clubs, and he is embracing the weight of that responsibility.
"Real Madrid is a great club, one of the best, and the pressure will be immense. When you go to a club like that, it's for the titles — they have 15 Champions Leagues, so hopefully I can win one with them,"he said.
Cucurella also reflected on the journey that brought him to this point, describing the opportunity as a fitting milestone. "My career hasn't been easy, and having the opportunity to go to Real Madrid is a wonderful thing, a great way to cap off my career. I hope I can lift trophies," he concluded.
