Curaçao Make History as Football's Smallest World Cup Nation

2 hours ago·3 min

A nation of just over 150,000 people is preparing to take the world stage. Curaçao are set to become the smallest country by population — and by area — ever to compete at a FIFA World Cup™, surpassing Iceland's milestone from 2018. Their debut campaign, in Group E of the FIFA World Cup 26™, begins on Sunday, June 14 in Houston against Germany.

The Blue Wave will also face Ecuador and Côte d'Ivoire in the group stage, navigating a path through traditional World Cup heavyweights. By many measures, this is the single greatest moment in the island nation's history.

A country united by football

Ludwig Alberto, the former Curaçao Under-20 national team coach and Head of Delegation at the tournament, has watched the sport transform his country in recent months. "This is really the power of football," he said. "Especially for a small country, it can bring a whole unity to the whole country."

The euphoria reached its peak when Curaçao secured qualification with a goalless draw in Kingston against Jamaica — overcoming two former FIFA World Cup™ finalists, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, along the way. Alberto described the scenes when the squad returned home: the streets were full, and something had permanently shifted.

"Right now, if you see football in Curaçao, everybody wants to get a ball," Alberto said. "The children are playing on the street and you can see there is a shift."

The commercial transformation has been equally striking. Demand for the national team's shirt — scarce at the start of qualification — has since exploded both at home and internationally. Alberto also noted that Curaçao, once better known as the name of a cocktail ingredient than a footballing nation, now commands global attention. "A couple of years ago, nobody had heard of Curaçao. It's not like that anymore. Everybody is talking about Curaçao," he said.

FIFA's investment behind the scenes

Curaçao's rise has not happened without support. FIFA has invested over USD 16 million in development projects in partnership with the Curaçao Football Federation (FFK), spanning infrastructure, national team operations, and grassroots football.

Like all 211 FIFA Member Associations, the FFK have accessed funding through the FIFA Forward programme and related initiatives. That investment helped build out the federation's Technical Centre, which now features a quality pitch, floodlights, seating, and hospitality facilities — allowing the national team to train and prepare at a higher standard.

Funding has also supported national team training camps and participation in international competition, a logistical challenge for a Caribbean island with complex travel routes and a squad largely based in Europe. Development funding has additionally strengthened the domestic league and youth structures on the island.

Curaçao are one of four debutants at what FIFA has billed as its most inclusive and expansive World Cup to date. For a nation of this size, simply arriving in Houston on June 14 represents an achievement without precedent — but Alberto believes the most lasting impact of this journey will be felt long after the final whistle.
