Italy international Daniel Maldini has had his driving licence suspended after he tested over the legal alcohol limit following a car crash in Milan in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Milan city police confirmed to BBC Sport that a road traffic accident involved the 24-year-old attacking midfielder. Officers administered a breathalyser test at the scene, and his licence was confiscated after a positive result. Maldini was taken to hospital for precautionary checks before being discharged.

Reports indicate that an initial breath test recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.91 grams per litre, with a second reading coming in at 0.89 g/l — both above Italy's legal limit of 0.5 g/l.

The crash

Maldini's Porsche Carrera 4 collided with another vehicle in the early hours of Sunday. Six people in total suffered minor injuries as a result of the collision.

The incident occurred just hours after Maldini had scored the winning goal for Cagliari in a 2-1 victory over his parent club Atalanta in Serie A — a striking personal performance that was quickly overshadowed by the events that followed.

Football royalty

Maldini carries one of football's most celebrated surnames. He is the son of AC Milan and Italy legend Paolo Maldini, and the grandson of the equally revered Cesare Maldini.

He became the third generation of his family to represent Italy when he made his international debut against Israel in a Nations League fixture in 2024. He has since earned six caps, with his most recent appearance coming in September 2025.
