Declan Rice Faces Fitness Race for England's World Cup Quarter-Final Against Norway

1 hour ago·2 min

Declan Rice is fighting to be fit for England's FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-final against Norway on Saturday, after a sickness bug compounded the neural injury he has carried throughout the tournament.

The Arsenal midfielder has been managing a persistent neural problem affecting his hamstring and lower back since the campaign began. He also missed England's group-stage victory over Panama with a calf knock before returning for the knockout-round wins over DR Congo and Mexico.

A sickness bug adds to Rice's troubles

According to BBC Sport, Rice was absent from training on both Wednesday and Thursday after falling ill, a development that has worsened his underlying neural issue. England's medical staff have taken precautions to contain the illness within the camp, with several other members of Thomas Tuchel's squad already sidelined or considered doubtful for the match.

Jordan Henderson will play no further part in the tournament after fracturing his arm in a fall over an advertising hoarding during the post-match celebrations that followed the victory over Mexico. Jarell Quansah is suspended after receiving a red card during that same match at the Azteca — a dismissal that left England a man down for almost 50 minutes of a 3-2 victory.

England's midfield options without Rice

Should Rice be ruled out, Tuchel is expected to call upon Elliot Anderson and Kobbie Mainoo — who has yet to feature at this World Cup — as his two central midfielders in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Jude Bellingham is capable of dropping into a deeper role, though the Real Madrid playmaker has thrived as a No. 10, contributing four goals and one assist across the tournament.

Rice, who was appointed England vice-captain by Tuchel ahead of the competition, has made 77 appearances for his country and scored seven goals. The former West Ham United captain is regarded as one of England's most important players — his absence would be a significant blow.

Suspension risk for the semi-final

Adding to England's concerns, Rice is among four players who would be banned from the semi-final if they collect a yellow card against Norway. Bellingham, centre-back Marc Guehi, and left-back Nico O'Reilly all share that same risk, each having picked up one booking during the knockout stage.

England's opponents Norway have also dealt with illness during the tournament. Crystal Palace striker Jorgen Strand Larsen missed Norway's opening group game against Iraq due to a sickness bug. Norway are captained by Rice's Arsenal team-mate Martin Odegaard, who will be looking to eliminate his club colleague from the competition.
