Deeney: England Cannot Win World Cup 2026 With Pickford in Goal
Former Premier League striker Troy Deeney has delivered a sharp verdict on England's goalkeeping situation ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, insisting that Jordan Pickford is not the man to carry the Three Lions to glory.
Appearing on CBS Sports, Deeney argued that Pickford's erratic behaviour on the pitch undermines team confidence — and that England simply cannot lift the trophy with him between the posts.
Deeney's case against Pickford
Pickford, 32, has held England's No. 1 shirt for close to a decade and started under manager Thomas Tuchel in the opening World Cup group match — a 4-2 win over Croatia in Dallas. Yet the Everton goalkeeper's display drew criticism after he conceded twice and was seen in a heated exchange with Tuchel on the touchline during the first half.
Deeney was unsparing in his assessment, particularly targeting Croatia's first goal, which he believes Pickford should have kept out.
