Memphis Depay has publicly condemned Corinthians, accusing the Brazilian club of "unacceptable behaviour" after they backed away from a previously agreed contract extension, leaving the Dutch striker without a club.

The former Manchester United and Barcelona forward had signed a two-year deal with the São Paulo side in 2024. He claims, however, that a renewal — approved at the highest levels of the club — was unilaterally withdrawn without his consent.

Depay's damning statement

"This renewal was explicitly agreed upon by the president as well as the sporting, legal and financial department. Some people decided however to breach this engagement," Depay wrote on social media.

"I didn't want this situation and always respected the club throughout the process, but now I am forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests," he added.

"In the upcoming days I will speak publicly but rest assured that I will not leave this unacceptable behaviour unsanctioned."

A productive spell cut short

During his time at Corinthians, Depay scored 20 goals in 79 appearances and contributed to two significant pieces of silverware — the Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Supercopa do Brasil this year. His departure leaves the club, currently seventh in Brazil's Serie A, without one of their most prominent attacking figures.

Corinthians cite financial pressures

The club acknowledged the difficulty of the decision in an official statement, pointing to financial sustainability as the determining factor.

"It became clear that taking on a new commitment of this magnitude would not be compatible with the financial balance we need to preserve to ensure the institution's sustainability. We recognise that this was a difficult decision, but it was undoubtedly necessary for the future of Corinthians."

Club president Osmar Stabile is expected to hold a press conference in the coming days to address the matter further.

World Cup exit adds to difficult period

The fallout comes at a turbulent moment for Depay. The 32-year-old, who is the Netherlands' all-time leading goalscorer, failed to find the net in three appearances as his country exited the 2026 World Cup in the last 32. With his club future now also unresolved, the striker faces a pivotal summer.
