Senegal goalkeeper Mory Diaw has issued a heartfelt public apology after his error in the 89th minute gifted Belgium an equaliser and ultimately contributed to Senegal's elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2026 at the Round of 32, with the final score reading 3-2 after extra time.
Diaw, who had stepped in for the injured Edouard Mendy, rushed off his line in an attempt to deal with a cross but failed to reach it, leaving Youri Tielemans with the simplest of headers into an empty net to make it 2-2. Senegal had led 2-0 before the tie unravelled in the closing stages and extra time.
A goalkeeper's burden
Taking to his X account following the defeat, Diaw did not shy away from accepting responsibility.
