Eight months ago, Donyell Malen was a peripheral figure at Aston Villa, struggling to carve out a meaningful role in the Premier League. Today, he stands as the most prolific scorer across Europe's top five leagues since making his Roma debut on 18 January.

The Netherlands international has netted 20 goals since arriving in Rome, surpassing Harry Kane (16), Lamine Yamal (15), and every other forward competing in the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1 over the same period. Add assists to the equation, and Malen leads there too — 22 combined goal involvements, ahead of Bruno Fernandes (20), Lamine Yamal (19), and Kane (18).

A tale of two careers

The numbers tell a striking story. In 46 appearances for Aston Villa, Malen scored 10 goals and contributed two assists. At Roma, he has already managed 21 goals and three assists in just 25 matches. His scoring rate has nearly doubled — from one goal every 149.8 minutes in the Premier League to one every 96.7 minutes in Serie A.

On the surface, these figures might suggest a player reborn. But Roma's success with the 27-year-old may have less to do with a sudden surge in confidence and more to do with how manager Gian Piero Gasperini has deployed him.

A position change makes all the difference

At Aston Villa, Malen was rotated across the front line and spent only 52 percent of his league minutes operating as a central striker. At Roma, that figure has climbed to 99 percent of his Serie A minutes through the middle — making him the undisputed focal point of Gasperini's attack.
