Dorgu's Late Heroics Rescue Manchester United in Eight-Goal Old Trafford Thriller

3 hours ago·2 min

Manchester United twice clawed back two-goal deficits to earn a dramatic 4-4 draw with Aston Villa at Old Trafford, with substitute Patrick Dorgu delivering a match-turning performance off the bench to earn his side a point.

Dorgu steals the show

Introduced in the 66th minute, Dorgu wasted no time making his mark — capping a stunning cameo with both an assist and a goal to fundamentally alter the contest's outcome. His impact earned him the standout rating of the afternoon with an 8 from BBC Sport.

It was not a day that belonged to United's first-choice defenders. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens endured a nightmare opening, allowing the first goal to pass through him and spilling a Nicolas Jackson effort to gift Villa their second, before diving the wrong way for a penalty. He finished with a 4. Diogo Dalot, who was replaced by Dorgu, was also rated 4 after conceding the penalty that handed Villa a second-half advantage.

Fernandes and Cunha lead United's response

Bruno Fernandes produced a composed penalty conversion — his second from the spot in as many games — to earn a rating of 7, while Matheus Cunha was United's most dangerous presence throughout, winning a crucial penalty with a driving run and rating 7 himself. Joshua Zirkzee, introduced late, contributed a stoppage-time goal that proved decisive in securing the draw.

Youri Tielemans, baited by Aston Villa supporters following his £35 million summer move from Villa Park, answered his critics in emphatic style by driving home his first goal for United to level the score, earning a 6.

Villa's Alysson shines before late collapse

For Aston Villa, Brazilian midfielder Alysson was the standout performer, rated 8. His first-minute shot stunned the hosts' own backline, his effort created Villa's second, and he won a penalty after the interval — only to be undone by a costly error for United's late equaliser.

John McGinn and Leon Goretzka both rated 7, with McGinn keeping his composure to convert from the spot and Goretzka driving in Villa's fourth goal on what proved to be a chaotic afternoon at Old Trafford.

Victor Lindelof, returning to a ground he knows well, turned in an accomplished display on a testing day and earned a 7, while Ian Maatsen was also rated 7 for his efforts before the late drama unravelled Villa's advantage.

The result means neither side can claim full satisfaction — but for United, the manner of their comeback, sparked by Dorgu, will offer genuine encouragement.
