DR Congo Earn Historic World Cup Point With 1-1 Draw Against Portugal

1 hour ago·1 min

DR Congo have written their name into FIFA World Cup 2026 history, securing the first point in the country's World Cup story with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Portugal in Houston on Wednesday.

Portugal drew first blood through João Neves, who opened the scoring as early as the 6th minute. DR Congo refused to fold, however, and Yoane Wissa delivered a memorable response deep in first-half stoppage time to level the match and stun one of the tournament's pre-tournament favourites.

The result carries enormous significance for DR Congo, who are competing in only their second World Cup — and their first since 1974, when the country entered as Zaire and departed without a single point or goal from three defeats.

Ronaldo makes history as DR Congo steal the show

The match also produced a landmark moment for Cristiano Ronaldo, who became only the second man in history to appear in six FIFA World Cups, joining Lionel Messi on that exclusive list. At 41 years and 132 days old, Ronaldo also became the oldest outfield player to start a World Cup match.

Despite those milestones, Ronaldo struggled to make his mark in attack and cut a frustrated figure throughout the contest as DR Congo's defensive resolve held firm against a Portuguese side widely tipped for a deep run in the tournament.

For DR Congo — who compete under the banner of the Léopards — this point represents a defining statement of progress, more than five decades after their sole previous World Cup appearance ended in disappointment.
