Egypt Defender Abdelmaguid Ready to Fulfil World Cup Childhood Dream

2 hours ago·2 min

Hossam Abdelmaguid has described the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup as the realisation of a dream he has nursed since childhood — and the Zamalek SC centre-back says he intends to make the most of every moment in North America.

At 25, Abdelmaguid has risen through the ranks with remarkable speed. Just three years after breaking into the first team, he finds himself preparing for football's biggest stage — a trajectory he admits he never anticipated.

"The World Cup was a dream for me because my older brother used to talk to me about the tournament when I was a child. I remember telling him I would play in the World Cup," Abdelmaguid told Reuters. "But I did not expect to realise that childhood dream so quickly, just three years after joining the first team."

Eyes on the knockout stages

Egypt have been placed in Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Iran — a draw that has energised the Pharaohs' fanbase and raised genuine hopes of a historic run in the competition.

Abdelmaguid insists that ambition is not limited to the fans in the stands. He believes Egypt have what it takes to emerge from the group and push deep into the knockout rounds.

"This is what the fans hope from us, and it is their right. It is also our right to aim for the knockout stages. Every fan has the right to dream of winning the tournament, but each team has its own circumstances. I believe we can advance from the group stage and go far in the World Cup. We want to win every game, and if we cannot win, then not to lose."

Hossam Hassan's influence

The defender credited Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan with instilling a winning belief in the squad, describing his motivational approach as central to the team's preparation.

"Hossam Hassan always motivates us and tells us we can do it, which gives us belief that we can achieve something for Egypt."

On facing elite opponents in the group, Abdelmaguid showed no signs of being overawed. He explained that detailed analysis — including video sessions with his performance analyst — forms a key part of his preparation, with Hossam Hassan guiding the squad through tactical work ahead of each fixture.

Egypt kick off their World Cup campaign knowing the entire nation's hopes rest on their shoulders. For Abdelmaguid, that pressure is a privilege he has been waiting his whole life to feel.
