Pro Ref, the English football refereeing authority, has acknowledged that Erling Haaland's winning goal in Sunday's Manchester derby should have been subjected to an on-field review — and that failing to do so was an error of judgement.

Haaland's second-half strike was the difference as Manchester City defeated Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford, a result made all the more remarkable by the fact that City played over an hour with ten men following Phil Foden's red card for kicking out at Bruno Fernandes.

The VAR controversy explained

The goal initially went through a lengthy VAR check after being flagged for offside. Haaland was eventually found to be in an onside position, with Patrick Dorgu — the Manchester United defender — adjudged to have played him on.

The controversy, however, centred on Enzo Fernandez, who appeared to be in an offside position and potentially interfering with play as the ball travelled across the penalty area toward Haaland.
