Enyimba are staring down a piece of club history they would rather forget — and only a win against Sporting Lagos on Wednesday can spare them the ignominy.

The Aba giants have lost all three of their opening fixtures in the 2025/26 EUROMATCH-NPFL season, falling to Niger Tornadoes, Doma United, and newly promoted Inter Lagos. That run leaves them as the sole team without a single point, anchored to the foot of the table.

A record that cuts deep

If Enyimba fail to win Wednesday's home game at the Enyimba International Stadium, they will match a dismal club record set in 1999 — when the club also went four matches without a victory to open a season. It would stand as the worst start to a campaign in over a quarter-century.

The 1999 season remains etched in club lore as one of the darkest chapters in Enyimba's history. What followed, however, was a remarkable transformation: a first league title in 2001 and back-to-back CAF Champions League crowns in 2003 and 2004, cementing the club's status as the dominant force in Nigerian football.

Kanu calls for unity

The gravity of the current slump has not been lost on the club's leadership. Chairman Nwankwo Kanu issued a public appeal on Tuesday urging supporters to stand firm behind the team.
