Christian Eriksen has left Wolfsburg by mutual consent, ending his spell at the German club just three months after collapsing on the pitch during a Denmark international fixture.

The 34-year-old midfielder has not featured since the incident in June, when a friendly against Ukraine was abandoned following his collapse. Wolfsburg confirmed that Eriksen's departure was motivated by his desire to be closer to his family in Denmark.

Eriksen's words on his departure

In an official statement, Eriksen expressed his feelings: "Right now, it's important for me to be close to my family in Denmark. I'm happy that we were able to find a solution together. My time in Wolfsburg was marked by many highs and lows."

"I know that the club is now in good hands to make the journey back to the Bundesliga, and I'm convinced that VfL has a successful future ahead of it. I would like to sincerely thank everyone who supported me at VfL and in Wolfsburg. It was a great pleasure to play for you, and I will fondly remember this time."

A difficult season on and off the pitch

Eriksen had joined Wolfsburg in September 2025 on an initial two-year deal after being released by Manchester United. He made 34 appearances last season, contributing three goals and 10 assists, but could not prevent the club from suffering relegation from the Bundesliga.

Wolfsburg dropped out of Germany's top flight following an aggregate defeat to Paderborn in the play-offs, ending their remarkable 29-year stay in the division. The club are now competing in the 2. Bundesliga, six matches into the new season.

Second cardiac scare for Eriksen

The June collapse was the second time Eriksen had suffered a medical emergency while representing Denmark. The first — and more widely remembered — occurred during Denmark's group-stage match against Finland at Euro 2020, when he suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch.

Following that incident, Eriksen was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) before making a remarkable comeback with Brentford in January 2022. It was his ICD that intervened during this year's collapse, allowing him to regain consciousness. He was subsequently able to walk off the pitch under his own power after receiving medical treatment.

Despite ending his time at Wolfsburg, Eriksen has not announced his retirement from professional football. After his collapse in June, the club had indicated he was on a pathway to return to playing, though his contract termination now leaves his next step uncertain.
