Femi Opabunmi, born on March 3, 1985, in Lagos, began his football journey in Ibadan, Oyo State, before the late coach Musa Abdullahi selected him as one of 23 players to represent Nigeria at the 2001 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago.

Opabunmi dazzled audiences with his electric wing play during that tournament, helping the Golden Eaglets reach the final — where Nigeria fell 3-0 to France. Despite the defeat, his individual performances earned him the Silver Shoe as the second-highest scorer and the Bronze Ball as the third-best player of the competition.

He went on to represent the Super Eagles at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, becoming one of the youngest players at the tournament at just 17 years of age.
