Fenerbahce's Two Presidential Candidates Unite on One Transfer Target: Mason Greenwood

4 days ago·2 min

Mason Greenwood has emerged as the number-one transfer priority for Fenerbahce — and remarkably, both candidates competing for the club's presidency agree on it. Former president Aziz Yildirim and challenger Hakan Safi are vying for leadership of the Turkish club, with the result of that election due on Sunday.

Greenwood, 24, has endured a turbulent spell at Marseille this season. The club's new sporting director Gregory Lorenzi confirmed last week that Marseille are willing to entertain offers for the forward, who has three years left on the five-year deal he signed upon permanently leaving Manchester United in July 2024.

A career rebuilt in France

Since departing Old Trafford — following an internal investigation that concluded he could not play for the club again — Greenwood has rebuilt his career on the south coast of France. Criminal charges of attempted rape and assault against him were dropped in February 2023, but the fallout reshaped his footballing future entirely.

Despite a difficult recent period, his record at Marseille is formidable: 48 goals in 81 appearances. This season he finished joint second in the Ligue 1 golden boot standings with 16 goals, level with Rennes' Esteban Lepaul and behind the winner.

In April, new Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi was forced to issue a public apology after defending Greenwood during his own tenure at Marseille — a controversy that added further noise around a player already under intense scrutiny.

Fenerbahce's European ambitions

For Fenerbahce, landing Greenwood would represent a significant statement of intent. The Istanbul club finished second in the Turkish Super Lig for the fifth consecutive season and are set to enter the UEFA Champions League at the second qualifying round in July.

Sources close to the situation suggest personal terms would not pose a significant obstacle. Manchester United retained a sizeable sell-on clause when they sold Greenwood to Marseille for 31.6 million euros (£26.6 million), meaning they stand to benefit from any future transfer.

Greenwood has also attracted interest from Roma in Serie A, making the coming weeks a decisive period for his next destination.
