FIFA Blocks England Fan's Flag Over Submarine Imagery at World Cup

A England supporter has been left frustrated after FIFA ruled that the imagery on his customised flag breaches tournament regulations — all because of a submarine.
John Little, a fan of English Football League club Barrow AFC, had designed a personalised St George's flag to take to matches at this summer's World Cup. The flag features the Barrow AFC club crest, which includes a silhouette of a submarine — a nod to the Cumbrian town's shipbuilding heritage. Little also added a second submarine silhouette to the flag's design.
FIFA cites military imagery policy
FIFA informed Little that displaying images of military equipment or weaponry inside World Cup stadiums is not permitted under its policies. As a result, he has been told he must cover the submarine imagery before the flag can be approved for use at matches.
The governing body did leave the door open, however, stating: "We would be happy to approve, if you were willing and able to submit again with the imagery covered up."
Any larger flags or banners must go through FIFA's approval process before supporters are permitted to bring them into stadiums.
Fan hits back at "harsh" ruling
Little was not shy about expressing his feelings on the matter, telling the BBC he found the decision difficult to accept. "I couldn't believe it really, it's a little bit harsh that they've done it for something like that," he said. "I could understand like guns and knives and what have you, but not a submarine."
England are set to compete at the World Cup this summer, and many supporters customise flags with local club crests or personal designs to show their identity in the stands.
