FIFA Clarifies Why Germany's Extra-Time Goal Against Paraguay Was Disallowed

2 hours ago·1 min

FIFA has defended the decision to disallow Germany's extra-time goal against Paraguay at the World Cup, stating that coaches and players had been briefed ahead of the tournament that such fouls would be penalised.

Germany defender Jonathan Tah believed he had put his side 2-1 ahead in extra time, only for VAR to intervene and prompt referee Jalal Jayed to overturn the goal. The official ruled that Waldemar Anton had fouled Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill in the build-up.

The match finished 1-1, and Paraguay eliminated Germany 4-3 on penalties. Tah — the man who thought he had scored the decisive goal — missed the crucial spot-kick, firing it over the bar.

Nagelsmann's frustration

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann was visibly unhappy with the call after the defeat, their first loss in a World Cup penalty shootout.
