FIFA Hand Argentina Heavy Sanctions Over 2026 World Cup Final Incidents

FIFA have sanctioned the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and four members of Argentina's squad and staff, alongside one Spain player, following disciplinary breaches at the 2026 World Cup — centred on a post-match altercation at the final on July 19.
A costly bill for Argentina
The AFA face a total fine of $321,000 (£235k), covering a range of violations: discriminatory chants and gestures by supporters, non-sporting demonstrations, team misconduct, and failures in match order and security.
FIFA have also imposed a 50% spectator capacity restriction on Argentina's next home match. A second capacity limit and $100,000 (£73k) of the fine are suspended, subject to a probationary period. An additional $100,000 of the total must be channelled into an anti-discrimination programme.
Player and staff bans confirmed
Midfielder Leandro Paredes received the heaviest individual punishment — a 10-match ban and a $90,000 (£66k) fine. Defender Nahuel Molina was handed a seven-match ban and an identical $90,000 fine.
Forward Thiago Almada and assistant coach Roberto Ayala received one-match and three-match suspensions respectively, each accompanied by a $30,000 (£22k) fine.
Spain midfielder Gavi was also sanctioned, receiving a one-match ban and a $30,000 fine for his role in the incidents.
When the bans will be served
FIFA confirmed that all match bans will apply during each national team's international fixtures scheduled for September and October. All parties have 10 days to request a motivated decision ahead of any potential appeal.
