Flying Eagles head coach Abdul Maikaba has shouldered the blame for Nigeria's 4-1 defeat to Burkina Faso in the WAFU B U-20 Championship final on Sunday, pointing to a catastrophic opening ten minutes that derailed his side's chances entirely.

"We lost the game in the first 10 minutes conceding three goals," Maikaba told BRILA FM. "We made a lot of tactical mistakes which cost us the early goals which forced us to come out and made them to hit us on the counter."

Burkina Faso's consistency rewarded

Despite the pain of defeat, Maikaba was generous in his praise for the champions. "Burkina Faso deserved to win because they have been consistent, they beat everybody — so I salute them, they are a very good side," he said.

Sunday's final was not the first time Burkina Faso got the better of Nigeria in this tournament. The Flying Eagles had already fallen to a 2-0 loss against the same opponents in their final group-stage match, making Burkina Faso the dominant force throughout the competition.

AFCON ticket and World Cup place slip away

The defeat carries consequences far beyond the trophy itself. As runners-up, Nigeria failed to secure the single qualification berth on offer for the 2026 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, which is scheduled to be held in Ghana.

That tournament will also serve as the qualifying stage for the 2027 U-20 World Cup, co-hosted by Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan — meaning the Flying Eagles have missed out on a pathway to both continental and global youth football's biggest prizes.
