Franco Baresi, one of football's most celebrated defenders and a pillar of AC Milan's glorious era, has died at the age of 66. The club confirmed his passing in a heartfelt statement, saying: "Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi. His example and integrity will be forever etched into the club's DNA, just as his iconic number 6 shirt is."

A career defined by loyalty and excellence

Baresi devoted his entire playing career to AC Milan, joining the club in 1977 and retiring 20 years later in 1997. Over that period, he amassed 719 appearances and contributed 33 goals — a remarkable tally for a central defender.

During that time, he led Milan to six Serie A titles and three European Cups — including triumphs in the UEFA Champions League — serving as captain for 15 of those seasons. His commitment to a single club, across two decades of the highest level, stands as one of football's most enduring legacies.

World Cup glory and a painful final

On the international stage, Baresi earned 81 caps for Italy. He was part of the squad that lifted the World Cup trophy in Spain in 1982, a triumph that cemented his generation's place in footballing history.

Twelve years later, he captained Italy in the 1994 World Cup final, a match that ended in heartbreak as Brazil claimed the title on penalties.
