Frank Lampard Commits to Coventry City Until 2029

2 hours ago·2 min

Frank Lampard has signed a new contract with Coventry City that will keep him at the club until 2029, ending speculation over his future following interest from rivals including Fulham.

The 48-year-old guided the Sky Blues to the Championship title last season — winning a record 28 league matches — and ended the club's 25-year absence from the Premier League. His previous deal had been set to expire at the end of next campaign.

A remarkable turnaround

Lampard arrived at Coventry in November 2024, replacing Mark Robins with the Sky Blues sitting 17th in the Championship, just two points clear of the relegation zone. He steadied the ship immediately, winning 16 of the remaining 29 matches to guide the club to fifth place and a play-off berth.

Although they fell to Sunderland 3-2 on aggregate in the play-off semi-finals, Lampard returned the following season with ambition, leading Coventry to the Championship title with a record-breaking 28 wins — more than the club had ever achieved in a single league campaign.

Lampard's reaction

"After the incredible work of everybody to get promoted and win the Championship, it was important to enjoy the moment, and we certainly did as a city. Our job then as staff, and for the players of course, is to firstly recharge but also focus on what we want to do and what we need to for next season. There's a lot of work to do on and off the pitch as a football club, so those things have been ongoing. I'm looking forward to getting back with the players, to see them all and get ready for the new season."

What comes next

Coventry begin their return to the top flight — their first appearance in the Premier League in 25 years — against champions Arsenal on Friday, 21 August. It is a daunting opener, but one that signals just how far the club has come under Lampard's stewardship.

Before arriving at the Coventry Building Society Arena, Lampard built his managerial career at Derby County, then Chelsea — whom he led to the FA Cup final and a Champions League semi-final — and Everton. His second stint at Chelsea followed before he eventually moved on. Now, he appears settled and committed to a long-term project at Coventry.
