Haaland's Late Strike Sends Norway Past Ivory Coast and Into Last 16

2 hours ago·2 min

Erling Haaland struck in the 86th minute to give Norway a dramatic 2-1 victory over Ivory Coast at Dallas Stadium, setting up a World Cup last-16 encounter with Brazil on Sunday.

The game had been heading toward extra time when Haaland tapped home Sander Berge's cross — a composed finish that delivered Norway their first ever knockout-stage win at a FIFA World Cup.

Nusa's brilliance opens the scoring

Norway did not start as favourites to dominate proceedings, and for much of the opening half Ivory Coast were the better side. Much of the pre-tournament attention in the Ivory Coast camp had fallen on winger Yan Diomande, but it was his RB Leipzig team-mate Antonio Nusa who left the biggest impression in Dallas.

In the 39th minute, Nusa curled a superb strike into the top corner against the run of play, giving Norway a lead their first-half performance had barely merited. Haaland had barely been involved — managing just one touch in the opening two minutes, a harmless header — and twice saw close-range chances blocked either side of half-time.

Amad turns the game

The second half belonged to Amad Diallo. The Manchester United winger entered from the bench and immediately made his presence felt: in the 67th minute he produced a remarkable goal-line clearance to deny Torbjorn Heggem from doubling Norway's advantage after Heggem met a Martin Odegaard corner.

Seven minutes later, Amad delivered the moment of the match. He jinked past several Norway defenders before crashing in a stunning equaliser in the 75th minute — a solo effort that announced Ivory Coast's arrival on the World Cup knockout stage.

Nicolas Pépé had earlier tested Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland with a low drive from inside the box, and with the game level Ivory Coast sensed a famous win. In the closing minutes, Amad nearly completed an extraordinary personal contribution when his free-kick struck the top corner, only for Nyland to push it clear.

Haaland has the final word

Yet Norway's talisman was not finished. In the 86th minute, Oscar Bobb played in Berge, whose cross found Haaland in the six-yard box. The striker's tap-in was straightforward — but the moment was anything but. Norway advance to the last 16, where they face Brazil in what promises to be the tie of the round.
