Leeds United look set to lose out on one of their primary midfield targets this summer after Fulham moved into advanced negotiations to sign Shea Charles from Southampton for around £25 million, according to a report from Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg.

The 22-year-old Northern Ireland international has been on Leeds' radar for some time, with the club identifying Charles as a key addition to their central midfield. However, their reluctance to meet Southampton's firm £25 million valuation opened the door for Fulham to step in and take control of the transfer.

Saints hold firm on valuation

Southampton's hierarchy repeatedly turned down a series of offers from Elland Road, insisting throughout that Charles would not leave for anything less than their asking price. Leeds' inability — or unwillingness — to match that figure has ultimately cost them the signing.

Fulham are now in advanced talks with Southampton, and personal terms with the player are not believed to be an obstacle. The Cottagers are expected to finalise the deal in the coming days.

A coveted homegrown talent

Charles' appeal stems from both his quality and his registration status. Having come through Manchester City's academy before joining Southampton in a £10.5 million move in 2023, he qualifies as a homegrown player — a valuable commodity under Premier League squad rules.

His composure in possession, ability to resist pressing, and defensive discipline made him one of the more impressive performers on the south coast last season. That combination of attributes attracted interest from multiple clubs this window.

Manchester City retained a 15 percent sell-on clause when they sold Charles to Southampton, meaning they stand to collect a portion of the incoming £25 million fee.

Premier League football tips the scales

While a move to Leeds would have represented a step up from the Championship, the prospect of immediate Premier League football under Fulham manager Alvaro Arbeloa proved decisive. Leeds will now have to turn their attention to alternative options to strengthen their midfield before the transfer window closes.

The club are not without consolation, however. Leeds remain on course to complete the signing of another homegrown talent and former Manchester City academy product, James Trafford.
