Gattuso's Hug and a Father's Dream: How Diego Demme Helped Revive Napoli

1 hour ago·1 min

In January 2020, Diego Demme was wrapping up a winter break — expecting to return to RB Leipzig — when his agent delivered a call that would change everything. Napoli wanted to sign him, and they wanted him immediately.

The timing was far from straightforward. RB Leipzig were leading the Bundesliga and charging towards a historic UEFA Champions League semifinal appearance. Napoli, by contrast, were mired in turmoil, sitting eighth in the Serie A table after a dressing room revolt that had consumed Carlo Ancelotti's tenure and led to his dismissal.

A club in crisis

The fallout from that revolt had been severe. Owner Aurelio De Laurentiis had attempted to fine players 25 percent of their salaries — and 50 percent for Lorenzo Insigne and Allan — after they refused to comply with a mandatory training retreat. Ancelotti paid the price. His replacement, Gennaro Gattuso, stepped into a club in free fall.

Gattuso moved swiftly, bringing in Stanislav Lobotka, Amir Rrahmani, Matteo Politano, and Andrea Petagna. For the midfield anchor he needed, he looked to the Leipzig captain — a player cast in his own combative mould.

Heart over head

Demme's logic told him to stay at Leipzig. But the pull toward Napoli ran deeper than reason. His father had been a lifelong Napoli supporter and had named him after Diego Maradona. And then there was Gattuso himself — Demme's childhood idol — suddenly asking him to play under his management.
