Ghana's Winless Run Reaches Four Games After 1-1 Draw with Wales

Ghana's troubled run of form extended to four matches without a win after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Wales in an international friendly, with Lewis Koumas heading in a stoppage-time equaliser to deny the Black Stars a morale-boosting victory.
Koumas denies Ghana at the death
The match at a sparsely attended Cardiff City Stadium was largely controlled by the home side in the first half, with Daniel James striking both the post and crossbar in quick succession — moments that summed up Wales's finishing on the day.
Ghana improved as the match wore on and broke the deadlock through substitute Caleb Yirenkyi, who pounced on a rebound to give the Black Stars the lead and delight their vocal travelling support.
The lead lasted only until the third minute of added time. Neco Williams delivered an inviting cross from the right flank, and a stooping Koumas met it with a firm header to score his first senior international goal and rescue a point for Craig Bellamy's side.
A difficult run under Queiroz
The draw compounds a difficult spell for Ghana, who have now lost three matches and drawn one in their last four outings. It was also a frustrating result for Carlos Queiroz, who was targeting a positive performance as part of Ghana's preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Wales, meanwhile, have now gone three matches without a win after missing out on World Cup qualification — a campaign that ended in disappointment when they were beaten by Bosnia-Herzegovina at the same Cardiff City Stadium venue in March.
World Cup group stage ahead
Ghana face a stern test at the FIFA World Cup 2026, having been drawn in a group alongside 1966 World Cup winners England, 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia, and Panama. At Qatar 2022, the Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage and will be eager to progress further this time around.
