Glenn Nyberg to Referee Spain vs Austria at SoFi Stadium

Spain and Austria go head-to-head this evening in a World Cup Round of 32 clash at the SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, with at least one more European side set to advance to the Round of 16.

Spain arrive as one of the tournament favourites, though they have yet to fully justify that billing. Austria, meanwhile, have been sharp in front of goal, netting six times on their way to the knockout rounds.

Swedish experience in the middle

Swedish official Glenn Nyberg has been appointed to take charge of the match. This will be his third assignment of the tournament, having previously refereed Ghana vs Panama and Curacao vs Ivory Coast.

Nyberg has been a fixture in the Allsvenskan, Sweden's top division, since 2013, and has steadily built a reputation as one of Europe's reliable officials. His recent high-profile assignments include Newcastle United's 2-1 home defeat by Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur's 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in last season's UEFA Champions League league phase.

He is perhaps best known internationally for sending off Cristiano Ronaldo during a World Cup qualifying fixture between Portugal and the Republic of Ireland in Dublin last November, after Ronaldo caught defender Dara O'Shea with an elbow.

Full officiating team

Nyberg will be flanked by fellow Swedes Mahbod Beigi and Andreas Soderkvist as his assistants. Dahane Beida from Mauritania takes the role of fourth official, while Elvis Noupue from Cameroon serves as reserve assistant referee.
