UEFA has handed punishments to Matteo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood following the disorder that overshadowed Fenerbahce's 2-1 Champions League victory over Lyon last month.

Guendouzi's ban and fine

Guendouzi received a four-match European ban — two of which are suspended — alongside a fine of 50,000 euros (£43,000). UEFA cited him for "insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and for violating the basic rules of decent conduct."

The Frenchman, 27, ignited the chaos when he appeared to bait Lyon supporters as Fenerbahce celebrated their win — a result that secured the Turkish club's place in the Champions League league phase. Guendouzi previously spent three seasons at Marseille, Lyon's fierce Ligue 1 rivals, between 2021 and 2024.

The midfielder defended his actions, pointing to what he described as sustained abuse from the stands. "When you have 60,000 people insulting your family, your mother, your children, even before the game and no-one on the referee's side tells the crowd to be quiet," he said. "If we can't celebrate the way we want afterward, I find that disappointing."

Guendouzi added that in France, such crowd behaviour would typically prompt officials to address supporters and potentially halt the match. The ban means he will miss Fenerbahce's opening two Champions League league phase fixtures against Roma and Aston Villa.

Greenwood's punishment

Greenwood, 24, who joined Fenerbahce from Marseille this summer, was also sanctioned — though less severely. UEFA found him guilty of "violating the basic rules of decent conduct" and issued a one-match suspended ban, subject to a one-year probationary period, along with a fine of 30,000 euros (£26,000).

Club fines

Both Fenerbahce and Lyon were each fined 50,000 euros for their clubs' failure to uphold UEFA's general and basic rules of conduct during the match.
