Harvey Elliott's loan move to Valencia has made a troubled start, with the Liverpool midfielder reportedly given a three-week window to overhaul his fitness or face further marginalisation at the Spanish club.

The 23-year-old joined Valencia on a temporary deal at the beginning of September, arriving off the back of a difficult stint on loan at Aston Villa — where manager Unai Emery ultimately decided against triggering the option to buy. Elliott departed Villa Park to widespread praise for his attitude, yet results on the pitch told a different story.

Out of shape and under pressure

Spanish sports publication Marca, cited by Sport Witness, reports that Elliott arrived in Valencia carrying excess weight and lacking the physical condition required to perform at his best. Journalist Dario Puig wrote that "the British player arrived out of shape" after an atypical pre-season and a underwhelming Premier League campaign.

"He's far from the Elliott of the past who dazzled with the quality he possesses," Puig noted. "He's well overweight for his physique. And now is the time to get fit."

Puig suggested that the move to La Liga offered Elliott a chance to reset mentally and professionally, but warned that the clock is ticking: "He must give it his all to reach peak form in these three weeks and contribute to the team."

Limited minutes in Valencia colours

Since arriving in Spain, Elliott has managed just 85 minutes across three La Liga appearances, all as a substitute. He came off the bench in defeats against Barcelona, Sevilla, and Real Sociedad, and was an unused substitute in Valencia's only victory of that run — a win against Alaves.

The extended international break — three weeks in total — now provides Elliott with a crucial opportunity to rebuild his fitness away from match action. He is currently far outside contention for the England senior squad, meaning he can dedicate the entire break to physical preparation.

Valencia, now managed by former Mexico national team boss Javier Aguirre following the departure of Carlos Corberan earlier this month, return to La Liga action on October 11 against Racing Santander. That fixture may represent Elliott's most important audition yet.

Having already seen his stock fall at both Liverpool and Aston Villa, Elliott can ill afford another loan spell defined by the margins. Valencia and the demands of La Liga may yet prove to be the jolt his career needs — but only if he can get himself fit in time.
