Hearts, Hibs and Motherwell Learn Euro Draw Fate on Wednesday

2 days ago·3 min

Three of Scotland's five clubs competing in European football next season will discover their potential opponents on Wednesday, as Uefa holds draws for both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Conference League in Nyon.

Hearts, Hibernian, and Motherwell are all in action in the second qualifying rounds of their respective competitions, with the ties scheduled for 23 and 30 July. Rangers, meanwhile, do not enter the UEFA Europa League until the third qualifying round but will watch proceedings with interest.

Hearts facing Fenerbahce or Sturm Graz

Hearts return to the UEFA Champions League qualifiers for the first time in 20 years after finishing as Scottish Premiership runners-up. They are already guaranteed one of two seeded opponents in the League Path: either Fenerbahce of Turkey or Sturm Graz of Austria, with the first legs set for 21/22 July.

The Edinburgh club are likely to be operating under new management by then, with head coach Derek McInnes widely expected to take charge of Rangers.

A victory over Fenerbahce would send Hearts into the third qualifying round as a seeded side, where they could face Sparta Prague, NEC Nijmegen, Union Saint-Gilloise, or the winner of the tie between Sturm Graz and Gornik Zabrze. A win over Sturm Graz, however, would leave them unseeded, with Lyon, Bodo/Glimt, and Olympiacos among the possible opponents.

Defeat at this stage would drop Hearts into the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round — the same section as Rangers, who will be seeded for their opening European fixture of the season.

Notably, a potential Hearts–Union Saint-Gilloise meeting would bring together two clubs connected to Brighton & Hove Albion owner Tony Bloom, who has invested in all three sides through his Jamestown Analytics firm. Bloom has deliberately kept his stake in Hearts and Union below 30 percent to comply with Uefa's multi-club ownership regulations.

Hibs and Motherwell face greater uncertainty

The UEFA Conference League second qualifying round draw carries more variables. Despite finishing below Motherwell in last season's Scottish Premiership, Hibernian are seeded for the draw — an anomaly that leaves Motherwell facing a considerably tougher pool of potential opponents.

Hibs could be pitted against Swedish sides GAIS or IFK Gothenburg, Israeli clubs Beitar Jerusalem or Hapoel Tel Aviv, Valur of Iceland, Coleraine from Northern Ireland, or Shelbourne of Ireland.

Motherwell's list of possible opponents is far more daunting and includes Ajax, Braga, Copenhagen, Gent, Rapid Vienna, Panathinaikos, Ludogorets Razgrad, FCSB, Partizan, AEK Larnaca, Rijeka, Cluj, HJK Helsinki, Brann, and Nordsjælland.

Uefa will first divide all teams into groups of six on Wednesday morning, at which point both clubs will know their five potential opponents before the full draw takes place.

Motherwell head into the draw still without a permanent manager after Jens Berthal Askou departed to join Toulouse following an impressive campaign at Fir Park. Whoever takes charge will be eager to avoid a repeat of the club's last Conference League appearance, when they were eliminated at this very stage by Sligo Rovers four years ago.

Hibernian head coach David Gray will be aiming to improve on last season's mixed European campaign, in which the Edinburgh side fell to Midtjylland in UEFA Europa League qualifying, beat Partizan in Conference League qualifying, but were ultimately knocked out by Legia Warsaw in the play-off round.
