Chelsea have confirmed the arrival of Jordan Henderson, who has joined the club on a free transfer following his departure from Brentford. The England international has penned a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge and will link up with his new teammates ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Henderson's excitement at the move

Speaking to the club's official website, Henderson made clear that the scale of the opportunity played a decisive role in his decision. "Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn't turn down," he said.

Henderson also pointed to the ambition shown by the club's ownership as a key factor. "I was also so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction," he added. "For me, it's about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I'm very excited to get going."

From Sunderland to Stamford Bridge — a long road

Henderson began his professional life at hometown club Sunderland, making his debut at Stamford Bridge against Chelsea in November 2008 — the very ground he now calls home. After a loan spell at Coventry City, he nailed down a first-team place with the Black Cats, going on to make 79 appearances and earning his first England cap during his time there.

He moved to Liverpool in June 2011, where he developed into one of the club's most influential figures. In June 2015, following the departure of Steven Gerrard, Henderson was appointed men's team captain — a role he carried with enormous distinction.

Under his captaincy, Liverpool experienced a remarkable era of silverware. The club lifted the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and ended a 30-year wait for the Premier League title the following season. Henderson also added the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Community Shield, the UEFA Super Cup, and the FIFA Club World Cup to his collection at Anfield.

After leaving Liverpool, Henderson had stints with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, Ajax in the Netherlands, and most recently Brentford in west London before completing his move to Chelsea.

A decorated international career

On the international stage, Henderson has earned 91 caps for England. He was part of the squads that finished as runners-up at Euro 2020 and claimed third place at this summer's World Cup.
