Hoffenheim Thrash Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 as Tella Features and Boniface Watches from Bench

1 hour ago·2 min

Bayer Leverkusen suffered a damaging 3-0 defeat away to Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Sunday, with Nigerian winger Nathan Tella starting for the visitors while compatriot Victor Boniface spent the entire match as an unused substitute.

It was Tella's third Bundesliga appearance of the season, yet the Super Eagles winger could do little to lift a Leverkusen side that were thoroughly outplayed in Hoffenheim. Boniface, the subject of recent transfer speculation, watched the full 90 minutes from the bench without getting a chance to influence proceedings.

A slow burn that ignited late

The match was goalless for much of the afternoon. Hoffenheim's Fisnik Asllani was denied by Mark Flekken early on, while Patrik Schick wasted a promising opportunity for Leverkusen by blazing over the crossbar.

The deadlock finally broke on 76 minutes when Edmond Tapsoba brought down Asllani inside the penalty area. Andrej Kramarić stepped up and drove the resulting spot-kick straight down the centre to give Hoffenheim the lead.

Leverkusen chased an equaliser, but Robert Andrich was denied by Oliver Baumann as the hosts held firm and began to sense more was possible.

Late drama seals a wild finish

Alexander Prass then delivered a moment of brilliance in the 89th minute, combining with Kramarić before firing an 18-yard strike past Flekken to double Hoffenheim's advantage. However, Prass immediately received a second yellow card — and was sent off — for excessive goal celebrations, leaving Hoffenheim to see out the game with ten men.

Rather than retreat, Hoffenheim pressed on. In the 96th minute, Kramarić struck the crossbar, and Max Moerstedt reacted fastest to poke the loose ball into the net, completing a stunning 3-0 win and capping one of the more chaotic finales of the Bundesliga season so far.

The result leaves Leverkusen with serious questions to answer, both about their defensive frailties and the continued underuse of Boniface, whose absence from the action drew attention given the speculation surrounding his future at the club.
