Liam Millar struck with eight minutes of normal time remaining to hand Hull City a 1-0 victory over Coventry City in a Premier League encounter that doubled as a duel between Nigeria's finest.

Nigeria internationals Semi Ajayi and Taiwo Awoniyi started for their respective clubs — Ajayi for Hull and Awoniyi for Coventry — and both completed the full 90 minutes. Their compatriot Frank Onyeka was absent from the Coventry squad due to a knock.

Back-to-back wins for the Tigers

Hull arrived at Coventry Building Society Arena on the back of a stunning 2-0 win over Manchester United in their Premier League return last week. Few had given them a chance of surviving the season, yet they made it two wins from two with a disciplined, counter-attacking display.

Coventry, by contrast, entered the match still searching for their first point after a 3-0 opening-day defeat at Arsenal. The Sky Blues dominated possession throughout but found it difficult to translate that control into genuine goal-scoring opportunities.

Awoniyi goes close, Hull more dangerous on the break

Awoniyi carved out Coventry's clearest opening in the first half when a deflected Loum Tchaouna cross fell his way, but he could not make clean contact and Hull goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis clawed the attempt away.

At the other end, Nobel Mendy forced Carl Rushworth into an excellent save with a 30-yard half-volley, while Millar squandered a one-on-one after rounding two defenders, dragging his shot wide. The Canadian winger made amends in the 82nd minute when Mohamed Belloumi threaded him through on goal and he slotted calmly past Rushworth.

The result sends Hull City second in the Premier League table after just two matches — a remarkable start for a side many expected to struggle from the moment the season began.
