George Ilenikhena has described his maiden call-up to the Super Eagles as a great honour, with the 20-year-old Al-Ittihad striker eager to make his international debut as Nigeria begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

Head coach Éric Chelle handed Ilenikhena his first national team invitation ahead of Nigeria's qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. Speaking at a media session in Uyo, the forward said being part of the squad at this point in his career carries enormous personal significance.

"It is an honour to be here. I am proud and happy to be part of this big national team, and for me, it's a big deal. I am just 20 years old, and I am here with big and already accomplished players," Ilenikhena said.

The young striker also noted the positive atmosphere within the camp, saying the group had quickly come together despite many players arriving just days before the match.

"The team spirit is very good. I just arrived yesterday and I can see that everyone is together like a big family, and that's very good," he added.

Ready to contribute against Madagascar

Nigeria open their qualifying campaign against Madagascar's Barea at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday. Ilenikhena made clear he is prepared to deliver whenever Chelle calls upon him.

"I am very excited. I will give my best, like always. I will give my best when the coach puts me on the pitch and help the team in the best way I can. We are ready and excited to play this first game, and we are preparing in the best way to win on Friday," he said.

Ilenikhena arrives in camp on the back of a standout club season, having set a Champions League record during Al-Ittihad's — formerly Monaco's — campaign against Barcelona. The forward's emergence gives Chelle a dynamic attacking option as Nigeria chase qualification for the continental showpiece.
