Infantino Tells Fans to 'Chill' Over World Cup 2026 Visa Concerns

last week·2 min

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has urged football fans concerned about visa access for the 2026 World Cup in the United States to relax, acknowledging that the governing body has no authority over U.S. immigration decisions.

Speaking on the issue, Infantino was candid about the limits of FIFA's reach, stating that it is sometimes better to simply "chill and relax" when it comes to visa matters — a process that ultimately rests with the U.S. government, not football's world governing body.

The remarks come amid growing anxiety among international supporters, particularly those from Africa and other regions, who fear that strict U.S. visa policies could prevent them from attending what promises to be one of the most-watched editions of the tournament.

FIFA's hands tied on immigration

Infantino made clear that FIFA cannot instruct Washington on who should be granted entry into the country. The United States co-hosts the 2026 World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico, with the majority of matches scheduled to take place on American soil.

For many African fans hoping to follow their nations — whether the Morocco Atlas Lions, Nigeria Super Eagles, Senegal Teranga Lions, or Egypt Pharaohs — securing a U.S. visa remains one of the biggest practical obstacles to attending the tournament in person.

FIFA has previously committed to working with host nation authorities to facilitate smoother visa access for fans and players alike, but Infantino's comments suggest progress on that front remains limited.

Ticket prices also in focus

Visa access is not the only concern for supporters planning to travel. Ticket prices for the 2026 World Cup have also drawn scrutiny, with many fans questioning whether the tournament will truly be accessible to supporters from lower-income nations, including much of the African continent.

With the 2026 edition set to be the first 48-team World Cup in history, anticipation is enormous — but so too are the logistical and financial barriers facing fans who want to be there.
