Ipswich Town have launched an investigation into racist abuse directed at winger Abdul Fatawu online, following the club's 1-0 defeat to Everton on Saturday.

The club confirmed on social media that it was "aware of online racist abuse" targeting the 22-year-old Ghanaian, describing the conduct as "completely unacceptable." Ipswich Town added that the investigation was being carried out in partnership with the Premier League and the relevant authorities.

"We will continue to offer Abdul our full support," the club stated.

Red card triggers wave of online abuse

Fatawu was included in the starting line-up for the match at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool, but was dismissed after collecting two bookable offences. It was following his red card that the wave of racist abuse on social media began.

Condemnation poured in from across the platform, with many users on X speaking out against the abuse targeting the player, who has made five appearances for Ipswich Town this season.

Fans' group Reach Tractors, which celebrates race, ethnicity, and cultural heritage within the Ipswich Town fanbase, was among those to call for accountability.

"We're disgusted by reports of racial abuse directed at Abdul Fatawu. Racism has no place in football or society. Everyone at Reach Tractors stands firmly with Abdul."

A £20m signing with international pedigree

Fatawu joined Ipswich Town from Leicester City in July in a £20 million deal, signing a five-year contract set to run until 2031. During his time with Leicester City, he scored nine goals in 44 appearances, establishing himself as one of the more exciting attackers in the division.

On the international stage, Fatawu featured in all four of Ghana's matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026, including a group-stage fixture against England. He has scored three goals in 32 appearances for his country.

When he put pen to paper on his move to the Suffolk club, he spoke of his excitement at the project ahead.

"I am proud to have signed for Ipswich Town. The ambition the club has is very exciting and I'm looking forward to being a part of that as we prepare for the Premier League season."
