Iwobi and Bassey Help Fulham Earn Hard-Fought Draw at Aston Villa

1 hour ago·2 min

Nigeria's Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey were both on the pitch as Fulham came from behind to hold Aston Villa to a 1-1 draw at Villa Park on Saturday, in what proved a gritty Premier League stalemate.

The result marked the ninth league outing of the 2026/27 season for both Super Eagles players. Iwobi delivered an energetic performance in midfield before being replaced by Cairrney in the 75th minute, while Bassey remained a constant presence in Fulham's defensive line from first whistle to last.

Villa's pressure goes unrewarded early on

Unai Emery's side controlled large portions of the first half and had an early opportunity to take the lead when captain John McGinn stepped up to take a 15th-minute penalty, awarded following a VAR handball review. McGinn's spot-kick, however, rattled the woodwork and stayed out.

Villa continued to press, and their dominance finally bore fruit just before the interval. Johan Manzambi played in Nicolas Jackson, who swept home a composed right-footed finish to hand the hosts a 1-0 advantage at halftime.

Fulham's resilience earns a share of the spoils

The visitors responded with purpose after the break. In the 64th minute, a costly mix-up in the Villa backline ended with goalkeeper Zion Suzuki turning the ball into his own net, bringing Fulham level and shifting the momentum of the match.

Emery sought to restore Villa's lead by making a triple substitution in the 66th minute, throwing on Emiliano Buendía, João Gomes, and Ibrahim Mbaye. The fresh legs added urgency to Villa's attack, and five minutes of stoppage time gave the hosts one final opportunity to find a winner.

Ultimately, Fulham's defence — with Bassey at its heart — absorbed the late pressure and saw out the draw, earning a valuable point away from home.
