Coventry, Ipswich, and Hull Defy Expectations With Encouraging Premier League Starts

Three newly promoted clubs are proving the doubters wrong — and together, Coventry City, Ipswich Town, and Hull City are writing one of the Premier League season's most compelling storylines.
Coventry's remarkable turnaround
Coventry's opening month back in the top flight was brutal. Frank Lampard's side, returning to the Premier League for the first time since 2001 after winning the Championship title, lost all four of their opening matches without scoring a single goal — conceding 10 in total. A 5-0 thrashing at Brighton left even their most loyal supporters fearing an immediate return to the second tier.
Yet Coventry have since turned their campaign around in style. Three wins from their next five matches — including back-to-back victories over Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United — culminated in Saturday's 3-1 triumph over Sunderland, lifting the Sky Blues to 15th in the table.
The summer rebuild played its part. Lampard spent more than £140 million on 12 permanent signings, bringing in Caleb Yirenkyi for a club-record fee, Carl Rushworth from Brighton, Sidiki Cherif from Fenerbahce, Loum Tchaouna from Burnley, and Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest. It took five weeks for the new-look squad to click — but click it has.
