Koumas Backs Himself to Deliver for Wales After Hull Heroics

Lewis Koumas has made a public pledge to show Wales fans what he is truly capable of — and his late equaliser against Ghana has given him a platform to build on.
The 19-year-old Liverpool attacker headed home a Neco Williams cross in the dying moments to earn Wales a 1-1 draw with Ghana at Cardiff City Stadium on Tuesday, recording his first international goal almost two years to the day after his senior debut for the national side.
Speaking ahead of the June fixtures, Koumas had been candid about his impact so far. "I don't really think [Wales fans] have seen anything from me yet if I'm going to be honest," he told BBC Sport Wales. "I've only had some cameos to try and show myself so I need to work harder and show a little bit more to try and get the trust of the gaffer."
A loan journey bearing fruit
Koumas — the son of former Wales midfielder Jason Koumas — spent the first half of the 2025-26 season on loan at Birmingham City, making 25 appearances across all competitions and scoring once. His second-half stint at Hull City proved more decisive: three goals in 19 appearances helped the Tigers earn promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs.
Reflecting on the Wembley celebrations that followed, Koumas described it as "one of the best days of my life for sure and memories that will stay with me forever." He added: "I'm really happy with the way my development's going. It's been a good two years. I think I've played nearly 110 games now."
Bellamy's influence
Under Wales manager Craig Bellamy, Koumas has become a regular squad member and is now targeting a consistent starting berth. He spoke warmly of his international boss. "He's really, really supportive, he's a really good coach," Koumas said. "He was a top, top player and he scored goals and that's exactly what I want to do. He's a great role model to work off."
Slot's exit unlikely to alter plans
Liverpool confirmed the dismissal of manager Arne Slot on 30 May, but Koumas does not expect the change at Anfield to significantly alter his short-term path — with another loan spell the most likely outcome. "I don't really think the plan changes for me," he said. "It's just going to be how it's always been, to just keep my head down, keep working hard, and if I impress, I impress."
With 11 senior caps already collected at 19, a Premier League promotion on his CV, and a first Wales goal now registered, Koumas is steadily making good on his own ambitions — one step at a time.
