Kovačić Commits to Manchester City Ahead of Final Contract Year

Mateo Kovačić has put an end to speculation about his future, confirming he will remain at Manchester City as he enters the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium.
The 32-year-old Croatian had been linked with a move to Serie A, but following direct conversations with manager Enzo Maresca and club officials, Kovačić says he received clear assurances that he remains part of their plans.
Club's backing proves decisive
Kovačić explained that knowing the club counts on him was the crucial factor in settling his mind. "I didn't feel question marks from them," he said. "I spoke with them, they count on me, which was important to hear from them."
He added that the responsibility now falls squarely on him to deliver: "For the players it's always on you to show your best version, because if you're playing good, the manager will put you first."
Maresca's measured response
Manager Enzo Maresca offered a measured assessment of Kovačić's situation following Saturday's pre-season friendly against Inter. "Mateo is our player, until the day he is here I will try all my best," Maresca said. "It's my duty to try to help players give their best. If he's here, I'm happy and we will continue to work with him."
A trophy-laden spell at the Etihad
Kovačić joined Manchester City from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 and has since collected the Premier League, the Carabao Cup, and the FA Cup across three seasons at the club. He has established himself as one of the most technically refined midfielders in the squad during a period of considerable change for the club.
Now heading into what could be his final year on his current deal, Kovačić appears determined to let his performances do the talking and earn a new chapter — whether at the Etihad or elsewhere.
