Lampard Backs Awoniyi to Thrive After Coventry City Move
Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has expressed strong confidence in new signing Taiwo Awoniyi, insisting the Nigeria international has all the tools needed to make a significant contribution at the CBS Arena.
Awoniyi completed his move to the Premier League club this week, ending a four-year chapter at Nottingham Forest. The 29-year-old had established himself as a fan favourite at the City Ground during his time there.
A familiar threat
Lampard made clear he was no stranger to Awoniyi's abilities, having faced him as an opponent. "In terms of Taiwo, we know him from what he's done at Nottingham Forest and I always thought he was a threat as an opponent," the Coventry manager told the BBC.
Lampard also spoke about fellow new arrival Sidiki Cherif, noting the two strikers would offer different qualities. "With Sidiki, he will be different to Taiwo, but it is a positive move from the club because we like to try and develop players," he added.
Hunger for minutes
The Coventry manager believes Awoniyi's desire for regular game time was the key factor behind his decision to leave Nottingham Forest. "There is a reason why Taiwo left Nottingham Forest and came to us. We really like him and hope he's going to be great for us," Lampard said.
"We are aware of that and I would flip that to the mental side of Taiwo — probably he is frustrated with game time. I like a player that is hungry to play and get his minutes. Of course, we have to look after him and prepare him. But I like a player that wanted to be the man and play more minutes."
Awoniyi's Premier League pedigree and physical presence are seen as assets that could prove invaluable as Coventry navigate the demands of top-flight football this season.
