Lisandro Martinez Agrees Personal Terms With Atletico Madrid in United Exit Push

51 minutes ago·2 min

Lisandro Martinez appears set to end his time at Manchester United, with Spanish outlet Fichajes reporting that the Argentine defender has reached a "preliminary agreement" on personal terms with Atletico Madrid.

The 27-year-old centre-back has endured a turbulent spell at Old Trafford of late — being hauled off at half-time against Leeds United, omitted entirely from the squad for the Como fixture, and reduced to a substitute role in the defeat to Bournemouth. His misery deepened at the weekend when he was sent off during Manchester United's loss to Chelsea, the third consecutive defeat under manager Michael Carrick.

A difficult chapter at Old Trafford

Martinez arrived at Manchester United from Ajax in the summer of 2022 for £57 million, reuniting with then-manager Erik ten Hag. The move was seen as a coup after United beat Arsenal to his signature. During his four years in Manchester, the World Cup winner has shown quality in flashes, though his height — 5ft 9in — has drawn recurring questions about his suitability for English football.

More recently, errors on the pitch and a public criticism of the club's hierarchy have accelerated speculation over his future. According to Fichajes, both Martinez and Manchester United are keen to part ways as soon as possible, with La Liga side Atletico Madrid the frontrunners to secure his services.

Contract situation and transfer timeline

Martinez's current deal runs until 2027, with United holding an option to extend it by a further year — a contract situation that makes the coming months a natural juncture at which to cash in. His market value, according to Transfermarkt, stands at €45 million.

Fichajes reports that Atletico Madrid must now decide whether to pursue the transfer in the January window or hold until the summer, with financial factors likely to influence the timing. Barcelona have also been credited with interest, amid reports that Frenkie De Jong has been filling in at centre-back for manager Hansi Flick.

FourFourTwo notes that a full agreement remains some way off, but the direction of travel is clear for all parties. Manchester United face Roma this week as their UEFA Champions League campaign continues.
