Liverpool Close to Landing Barcelona Defender Araujo on Season-Long Loan

Liverpool are on the verge of completing a season-long loan deal for Barcelona and Uruguay centre-back Ronald Araujo, with an option to purchase him at the end of the arrangement.
The 27-year-old is expected to join the Liverpool squad this weekend, providing much-needed defensive reinforcement following the departure of Ibrahima Konate, who moved to Real Madrid on a free transfer.
A Barcelona stalwart arrives at Anfield
Araujo has been a cornerstone of Barcelona's defence since arriving from Uruguayan club Boston River in 2018, accumulating more than 200 appearances for the Spanish side. He played a key role as Barca claimed La Liga titles in three of the last four seasons.
Despite ending last season wearing the captain's armband, Araujo managed only 11 league starts as Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi established themselves as Barcelona's preferred central defensive pairing.
Araujo remains under contract at Barcelona until 2031, but the club are willing to let him depart temporarily, leaving the door open for Liverpool to exercise their purchase option at the end of the loan.
Filling the gap left by Konate
Liverpool's pursuit of Araujo accelerated after Konate completed his move to Real Madrid, leaving manager Arne Slot short of options at the heart of defence. Araujo's experience in winning La Liga and his ability to lead at the highest level make him an attractive solution to that problem.
