Liverpool Land Victor Munoz in £34.5m Deal, Beating Off Real Madrid and Manchester United

Liverpool have agreed a £34.5 million deal with Osasuna to sign Victor Munoz, with the 22-year-old completing his medical at the club on Wednesday ahead of a six-year contract. The Reds beat out interest from Real Madrid, Manchester United, Newcastle United, and Bayer Leverkusen to secure the Spain international.
Munoz will become the first signing of the Andoni Iraola era at Anfield — a landmark moment as Liverpool begin to reshape their squad under their new head coach.
Iraola's influence was decisive
According to Liverpool Echo, Iraola played a central role in convincing the club to pursue Munoz. After early conversations with Liverpool's recruitment team, the 20-time English champions accelerated their efforts to sign the former Real Madrid academy product, whom Iraola is said to admire.
Barcelona had also shown interest in Munoz, but they moved on to sign Anthony Gordon instead. Real Madrid possessed a matching rights clause in their agreement with Osasuna — one that was quickly ruled out — while 50 percent of Munoz's release clause is owed to Real Madrid, who sold him last summer. Liverpool will settle the fee in two instalments.
Goals, assists, and survival
Munoz arrives with a strong recent campaign behind him. The Spain international scored seven goals and registered five assists across 36 La Liga appearances for Osasuna in the 2025/26 season, helping the club avoid relegation on the final day. He is currently representing Spain at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Filling a void up front
The signing addresses a pressing need in Liverpool's attack. Mohamed Salah departed at the end of the season, and Hugo Ekitike faces an extended absence after suffering a damaged Achilles tendon. Munoz's versatility makes him well suited to provide immediate cover and competition across the front line.
His arrival is not expected to end Liverpool's transfer activity. The Reds remain in pursuit of RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, a 19-year-old Ivory Coast international. Leipzig are reluctant to sell, and Paris Saint-Germain — the reigning European champions — are also monitoring the player, who has been linked with a fee of around €100 million.
