Liverpool's pursuit of Michael Olise appears to be over before it truly began, with Bayern Munich reportedly set to hand the French winger a contract extension so lucrative it would place him beyond the Merseyside club's financial reach.

According to journalist Christian Falk, Bayern are planning to insert a release clause of between €150 million and €250 million (£126m–£211m) into Olise's new deal — a figure that effectively shuts out Liverpool and most other potential suitors.

A new normal in Munich

Bayern Munich have historically avoided including release clauses in player contracts, preferring to retain full control over departures. That stance has shifted in recent years, with buyout clauses now becoming standard practice at the Allianz Arena, following a similar arrangement in the contract recently agreed with Jamal Musiala.

Olise, 23, has been one of European football's standout performers since leaving Crystal Palace for Bavaria. After coming through the youth ranks and making his professional debut at Reading, he developed into a Premier League creator of the highest order at Selhurst Park before his move to Germany elevated his game further.

Liverpool's budget won't stretch

Under Fenway Sports Group's ownership, Liverpool operate within a disciplined financial model. The club has already committed significant funds to recent arrivals — and while statement signings are not beyond them, triggering a world-record release clause for Olise falls outside what their current budget allows.

With Bradley Barcola now part of their attacking setup, the urgency around recruiting a wide forward of Olise's profile has also diminished. The Frenchman's imminent long-term commitment to Bayern only confirms that Liverpool must look elsewhere to strengthen their forward line.
