Liverpool have completed the signing of centre-back Ronald Araujo from Barcelona on a season-long loan, with a purchase option of £47.14m (€55m) included in the agreement.

The club will pay none of the loan fee to Barcelona and will instead cover Araujo's entire salary throughout the duration of the deal. It is understood the 27-year-old accepted a pay cut to make the transfer happen.

Araujo's arrival addresses a mounting defensive crisis at Anfield. Ibrahima Konate departed for Real Madrid this summer, while new signing Jeremy Jacquet — a 21-year-old recruited from Rennes — has yet to feature in pre-season after missing the second half of last campaign with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

Further compounding the situation, Joe Gomez sustained a muscle injury during Liverpool's first pre-season outing, and teenage centre-back Giovanni Leoni continues to recover from an ACL injury. That left captain Virgil van Dijk as the club's only fully fit senior centre-back before Araujo's arrival.

Araujo's journey from Uruguay to Anfield

Born in Uruguay, Araujo made the move to Spain in 2018 and made his Barcelona debut the following October. He has since accumulated more than 200 appearances for the Catalan club and was appointed one of the captains following Marc-Andre ter Stegen's departure in January.

Despite that leadership recognition, Araujo started only 11 LaLiga matches for Barcelona last season. His campaign was significantly disrupted by a break from football in November 2025, which he later revealed was taken to address depression.

Araujo signed a new contract with Barcelona extending until 2031 last year, meaning the option-to-buy clause will be crucial should Liverpool wish to make the transfer permanent at season's end. Manager Andoni Iraola now has a significantly more experienced option alongside Van Dijk at the heart of his defence.
