Livramento Undergoes Surgery After World Cup Injury Heartbreak

Newcastle United have confirmed that Tino Livramento has undergone a minor surgical procedure on the calf injury that ended his FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign before it even began.
The 23-year-old full-back had been named in Thomas Tuchel's England squad and travelled with the group to the United States, only to suffer the injury during a training session ahead of the Three Lions' Group L opener against Croatia.
In a brief statement, Newcastle United said: "Newcastle United can confirm that Tino Livramento has successfully undergone a minor surgical procedure. The defender, who returned from World Cup duty with an injury, is expected to return during pre-season. Everyone at the club wishes Tino a smooth and speedy recovery."
Tuchel's emotional response
England manager Tuchel did not conceal his disappointment after losing Livramento to injury, describing the moment the full-back pulled up in training as a gut punch for the entire squad.
"I was very disappointed and very sad. All of us were. It was a little shock in training when he stopped training and he straight away had the feeling that this could be an injury that costs him the tournament and, unfortunately, he was right,"
Tuchel said.
A career marked by injury setbacks
Livramento, who moved to Newcastle United from Southampton in 2023, has accumulated just six England caps despite being widely considered one of the most talented full-backs in the country. Four of those appearances came under Tuchel, with a fifth under former Under-21 coach Lee Carsley during his caretaker stint in November 2024.
Injury has been a recurring theme throughout Livramento's career. He managed only 17 Premier League appearances last season, a sharp contrast to the campaign before it, when he featured in all but one league match.
Newcastle United expect him to return to full training in good time before the start of the 2026-27 season, with his sights set on the club's opening fixture — a home clash with Liverpool at St James' Park on Sunday, 23 August.
Meanwhile, England face DR Congo in the round of 32 on Wednesday, without Livramento in their ranks.
