Lookman Opens La Liga Account as Atletico Madrid Hammer Sevilla 3-1

2 hours ago·2 min

Ademola Lookman scored his first La Liga goal of the season as Atletico Madrid swept aside Sevilla 3-1 at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán on Saturday, moving the visitors to the top of the table.

The result lifts Atletico to first place on seven points, while Sevilla remain in fifth on six points. It was Atletico's second league win of the campaign, alongside one draw.

First-half blitz settles the contest

The match was effectively decided before the break as Atletico raced into a commanding 3-0 lead. Alex Baena got the ball rolling just four minutes in, opening the scoring to give Atletico an electric start.

Lookman doubled the advantage in the 26th minute with a precisely struck low drive that beat the Sevilla goalkeeper at his near post — a clinical finish that ended his wait for a league goal this term.

Baena then completed a first-half brace in the 33rd minute, extending the lead to 3-0 and all but ending the contest as a contest. Lookman had an effort overturned for offside before he was substituted off in the 66th minute.

Sevilla's late consolation

Miguel Angel Sierra grabbed a consolation for the hosts in the 66th minute, reducing the deficit to 3-1, but Sevilla could find no further way through as Atletico's defence held firm to the final whistle.

Fellow Nigerian Chidera Ejuke came off the bench for Sevilla in the 55th minute, adding some late impetus for the home side, though it ultimately proved insufficient.

Atletico head into the next round of fixtures with maximum confidence, sitting comfortably at the summit of La Liga after three matches.
