Lookman's Atletico Madrid Hold Villarreal to Dramatic 2-2 Draw

1 hour ago·1 min

Nigeria winger Ademola Lookman featured for Atletico Madrid as they salvaged a dramatic 2-2 draw against Villarreal in their La Liga matchday 2 fixture on Sunday.

Lookman, who struggled to make a significant impact during the contest, was withdrawn in the 79th minute, replaced by Jose Gimenez. It was the Super Eagles forward's second appearance for Atletico Madrid in the current season.

How the goals fell

Atletico Madrid broke the deadlock just before the hour mark, with Spain defender Pubill curling a long-range effort powerfully into the top corner to give the hosts the lead.

Villarreal responded swiftly, however. Moreno converted from the penalty spot after Morten Hjulmand clumsily brought down Tajon Buchanan, restoring parity before the game took another twist.

Ten-man Atletico dig deep

Defender Robin Le Normand received a direct red card in the 76th minute, reducing Diego Simeone's side to ten men. Villarreal capitalised almost immediately, with Mikautadze putting them ahead in the 78th minute.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Atletico Madrid refused to fold. Giuliano Simeone struck an equaliser in the 84th minute to level matters and deny Villarreal all three points.

The result means Atletico Madrid earned a hard-fought point at home, leaving both sides level heading into the next round of La Liga fixtures.
