Alexis Mac Allister has admitted he is deeply hurt that Liverpool have not approached him about extending his contract, and revealed he had genuine options to leave the club in the summer transfer window.

The Argentine midfielder, who arrived at Anfield on a five-year deal from Brighton & Hove Albion in June 2023, spoke candidly ahead of Liverpool's UEFA Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.

"I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract which, of course, makes me very, very sad," Mac Allister said. "Everyone can see that I give my 100% for this football club every single day in training and games. I always give my best."

Watching team-mates renew

The 27-year-old acknowledged the bittersweet feeling of seeing his colleagues Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch secure new deals at the club this year.

"I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it," he said. "At the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn't get mine. Of course, there is still time."

Mac Allister, who has been linked with a move to Manchester City, confirmed he has had no direct dialogue with Liverpool over the club's decision not to extend his deal. Despite the uncertainty, he was resolute in his commitment: "The fans don't need to worry because I will give my 100% until the last day I am here."

A bond built on trophies and tough times

Mac Allister reflected on the connection he has built with Liverpool since joining, including the club's Premier League title triumph. "We won a Premier League together, we went through difficult times together and I always give my best — so we will see what happens," he said.

The midfielder, who was part of Argentina's 2022 World Cup-winning squad, insisted he had no need to prove a point — only to perform. "I love this club. I love the fans. I know very well this is an amazing club and this city has something very special."

He also confirmed that departure was a genuine possibility earlier this year. "There were options to leave this summer. I think right now I'm in the right club and I have the right mindset to give 100% for this club," he added.

Iraola backs his player

Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola, appointed this summer following the sacking of Arne Slot, moved to ease concerns over the situation. "The important thing is he wants to be here," the Spaniard said. "We haven't been together a long time but he has been an important player and I rate him very highly. There is still a lot of time to talk about those contract situations."
